Friday FB Ads Tip #31: Mobile News Feed Changes

From August 19th the way posts and ads display in the mobile news feed on Facebook is going to change.

Facebook’s goal is to reduce the amount of space used up which will make it more like Instagram.

The main changes are the reduction of visible text from seven to three lines before a “more” link is shown and a decrease in the max height of images and videos.

In proportion to the width, they will change from 2:3 to 4:5.

The change that will have the biggest impact on advertisers is undoubtedly the reduction in the text displayed.

I am a firm believer in using this text to say something that speaks of the pain your potential audience are feeling and the benefits that they will get from what you are offering.

After digging deep into the businesses and offerings of my clients I use a unique technique to craft ad copy.

The opening sentence is the most important part of the ads I write so this change will ensure me and many other Facebook ad experts become even more succinct when writing copy that our target audiences identify with.

This week my tip is about a recent change that Facebook have announced that they’re making to the mobile news feed. So essentially they’re reducing the amount of space that a post or an ad will take up in the mobile news feed, because they believe this will improve user experience.

The trouble for advertisers is that obviously it gives you less space to get your message across, especially because they’re reducing the amount of text that will be shown from seven lines down to just three lines.

So it means that what you’re saying in those first three lines, it’s all the more important that you get a clear message across and that you have something there that your potential audience can identify with.

It also means that it’s even more important how your image looks or how the opening part of a video looks, if you’re using a video. So pay attention, the change is coming in the 19th of August. All the best, see you again next week!
